Choosing an exterior material is a long-term decision. Here's how stucco compares to brick and fiber cement siding on durability, cost, and upkeep.
Overview of Each Material
Stucco is a cement-based coating applied wet over lath and a weather-resistive barrier, cured into a hard, seamless shell. Brick is a fired-clay masonry unit, typically installed as a veneer over a wood-framed wall with an air gap for drainage. Fiber cement siding is a manufactured board product made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibers, installed in planks or panels similar to traditional wood siding.
Durability Comparison
Brick is extremely durable and essentially maintenance-free on the material itself, often lasting a century or more, though mortar joints need periodic repointing. Stucco is also very durable — 50+ years with proper installation — but more prone to cracking than brick if control joints or substrate movement aren't managed well. Fiber cement is durable and resists rot, fire, and pests, but its painted or factory finish typically needs repainting or recoating every 10-15 years, and seams between boards need caulk maintenance.
Cost Considerations
Fiber cement siding is often the most budget-friendly of the three upfront. Traditional stucco tends to fall in the middle to higher range due to labor-intensive multi-coat application. Brick veneer is frequently the most expensive option upfront due to material and labor-intensive masonry work, though its long lifespan and minimal maintenance can offset that cost over decades of ownership.

Brick suits traditional, colonial, and craftsman styles and offers a classic, timeless look with limited color variation (though painted brick has become popular). Fiber cement is highly versatile, available in lap siding, shingle-style panels, and board-and-batten profiles, making it adaptable to almost any architectural style, including modern farmhouse designs common in newer Northwest Arkansas neighborhoods.
Climate Performance in Northwest Arkansas
All three materials can perform well in our region when properly installed, but each manages moisture differently: brick relies on an air gap and weep holes behind the veneer, stucco relies on its WRB and weep screed, and fiber cement relies on a WRB behind the boards along with careful caulking at seams. Freeze-thaw cycling affects brick mortar joints and stucco cracks similarly if moisture gets trapped, underscoring that installation quality matters more than the base material for any of these three options.
